OAME’s Board of Directors meeting and Annual General Meeting was held October 2–3, 2026, in Brampton. We reviewed financial and organizational matters, and continued planning for the 2026–2027 year and beyond. Several committees also met to set goals and action plans aligned with OAME’s priorities. It wasn't all business; we also did some math with special guest Erik Teather.
Welcome to our new members of the Board of Directors, or Board members in new roles:
Sara Schoales (NWOAME Chapter Rep)
Amanda Jean Davison (TEAMS Chapter Rep)
Jimmy Pai (O34ME Chapter Rep)
Carly Ziniuk (Grade 7-12 Director)
David Petro (OAMETalks Moderator)
Teresa Weselake (Grade JK - 6 Director)
Elli Weisdorf (Grade 7-12 Director)
Goodbye and thank you!
Alvarine Aldridge (TEAMS Chapter Rep)
Janet Fuchek (NWOAME Chapter Rep)
Lisa Rossiter-Thornton (Grade 7-12 Director)
OAME & TEAMS extends its sincere appreciation to Alvarine Aldridge for her years of involvement with Ontario mathematics, including six years of dedicated service as the TEAMS Representative to the OAME Board of Directors. Throughout her term, Alvarine has been a quiet but influential voice whose thoughtful insights and unwavering commitment have strengthened both organizations. She has shared her expertise in the effective use of mathematical manipulatives with educators and students across Ontario, as well as internationally in Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. Alvarine has also mentored countless students, including many who have continued to contribute to the mathematics education community. Her leadership as Co-Chair of Registration at numerous OAME provincial conferences, including 2013, 2021, 2023, and 2026, has been invaluable. In addition, her long-standing involvement with Ontario Mathematics Olympics committees has helped support and inspire generations of young mathematicians. We thank Alvarine for her remarkable service, leadership, and lasting contributions to mathematics education.
Playful Pathways: Game-Based Math Learning for Junior Students Across Algebra and Spatial Reasoning: an OAMEtalks Webinar on Oct 14th at 8pm with Kendra Kozlowski and Anne-Marie Painter
Ready to level up math learning through play? This session invites educators to explore a dynamic collection of low-prep, high-engagement math games designed specifically for junior learners. Rooted in the Ontario curriculum, each game targets key expectations in algebra, spatial reasoning, and probability and data - while offering multiple access points to support diverse learners. Participants will experience firsthand how game-based learning can spark curiosity, deepen conceptual understanding, and foster collaborative problem-solving.
What is OAMEtalks? It's a place to hear the voices from the OAME conference! The main part will be in the form of webinar versions of some of the popular sessions from the previous year's conference. These webinars will be available exclusively to OAME members only. They will be available live (mostly) on the second Wednesday of the month and then will be archived and available from the OAME website.
Registration for this, and all webinars, at https://oame.on.ca/mcis/
The other part will be in the form of a podcast. This podcast will be a short conversation with each of our webinar presenters to get a preview of what their session will be about. The podcasts will be available to the general public on the https://talks.oame.on.ca/ pages and through iTunes and Google Play.
Recording available:
Wed Sept. 9th: Erick Lee - Bigger on the Inside: The Surprising Power of Short Math Routines
Join Cal Armstrong in Orillia for an evening with chatOAME, a hands-on workshop designed for educators at all levels of AI experience. Bring a laptop or tablet and explore chatOAME’s Ontario-specific tools for planning, thin-slicing across grade bands, lesson and assessment development, professional development and real-world data. You’ll also learn how OAME and chatOAME are working to reduce the environmental impact of AI use, and you’ll have an opportunity to share feedback and suggestions with OAME about how chatOAME can better support your work. The session takes place October 22, 2026, from 5:30–8:00 p.m. at Patrick Fogarty C.S.S., 15 Commerce Rd., Orillia, ON, with dinner provided. Registration is at https://mcis.oame.on.ca with a $15 deposit reimbursed after attendance.
The TEAMS chapter of OAME (Toronto area) has been busy planning the annual TEAMS conference. One of the biggest concerns educators have is the impact of technology in the classroom. Current apps, AI, and how to maximize the use of technology are all on the list of needs. As such, the theme of this year's conference is Technology and Beyond.
Join us in the morning of Saturday, October 24 to hear our keynote speaker Shelley Yearley, co-author of Rethinking Fractions, followed by a workshop and lunch.
See the full program here; share our poster here! Registration is via https://mcis.oame.on.ca

Mark your calendars for next summer! BTC27 Canada is coming to Toronto for a three-day Building Thinking Classrooms event bringing educators together to learn, collaborate, and celebrate thinking classrooms.
Hosted by SWOAME and ISOMA (chapters of OAME), BTC27 Canada will welcome Dr. Peter Liljedahl, featured speakers, and presentations from educators (maybe you?) from across teaching subjects and roles. The conference will highlight the uniqueness of Canadian classrooms while bringing diverse voices together to deepen and extend the Building Thinking Classrooms conversation.
The pre-conference and conference will take place at Havergal College from Sunday, August 22 to Tuesday, August 24, 2027, with evening social activities also being planned.
Save the date and spread the word! More information about registration, speaker proposals, travel, and accommodations is coming soon.
PRMA (Pine Ridge Math Association) hosted a fall workshop with Pam Harris on September 28th. The event was very well attended by both experienced teachers and teacher candidates from Ontario Tech University and lots of good discussion on the topic of Avoiding the Trap of Algorithms.
