Stay tuned for the Summer editions of The Counter throughout July & August. Mathematics education never stops... but you should take a well-deserved break! You can always catch up on The Counter at our archive: OAME News
An exciting update from May's Counter: Équipe Francobotique (the group of students who created the ArchéoMath project) attended the International First LEGO League (FLL) Championships in Mexico; 65 teams from 20 different countries competing in both the robot game and the innovation project.
The team represented Canada - and came out on top! The students won four major awards including 1st Place Champions in the robotics alliance challenge! The judges were thrilled with the ArchéoMath innovation project and gave the students glowing reviews.
You can find more information on Équipe Francobotique's success (and more about the competition and projects) at their website: EquipeFrancobotique
And it was Millicent Adaku Arhin, from Hillcrest Academy in Laval, QC who won the draw last month. Congrats!
Looking for a little math inspiration to tuck into your summer reading pile? The June 2026 edition of the Gazette and Abacus has a great mix of thoughtful reflection, practical classroom ideas, and just-for-fun mathematical play. Teachers planning ahead for September may want to start with the Abacus Order of Operations Choose Your Own Adventure activity, a ready-to-use task that invites choice, reasoning, discussion, and even some creative group-making. The issue also offers timely thinking about using digital technology in ways that support student thinking, along with ideas for strengthening classroom strategies next year. And for lighter vacation reading, there are plenty of gems: Martin Gardner-inspired puzzles, tricky tilings, the surprising history of the percent symbol, children’s books viewed through a mathematical lens, and the mathematics behind building a three-dimensional OAME/AOEM logo. Whether you are reading on the dock, in the backyard, or between well-earned naps, this issue may leave you with a puzzle to try, a question to ponder, and classroom ideas for the fall.

Join keynote speakers Dr. Kristopher J. Childs and Dr. Marian Small at OAME2027 for an inspiring journey into the power of storytelling in mathematics under the theme “Mathematics Through Stories: Cultivating Courage, Curiosity & Connection.” The 2027 conference encourages educators to envision mathematics as a story‑driven learning experience—one that inspires courage, ignites curiosity, and nurtures meaningful connections in the classroom. This conference will be virtual as we recognize the challenges in gathering together face-to-face. But why not plan to watch & participate in small groups at a local restaurant, at your school, or open your home for a get-together to discuss and share community time with your colleauges? Write the story with others!
Don’t miss this opportunity to explore how storytelling can reshape math education and empower every learner. Come be part of the story—and help us write the next chapter of mathematics education together.
Save the date! April 27 - 30, 2027

Coming this summer! The OTF Subject Associations are planning a series of online webinars for elementary teachers who are starting a new grade level (or are new teachers entirely) and want to have a chance to learn from experienced educators at that level. More information will be coming out so keep an eye for The Summer Counter arriving in your email (or the web archive at OAME News )! OAME will be actively involved to ensure that folks entering a new math class will have the support they want!
Updates continually roll out for chatOAME (the OAME-centred chatbot included with your membership) as AI continues to evolve... and more to come in the summer!
We noticed that people often asked great questions about a mathematical topic or pedagogical approach and then prompted chatOAME to "Make a student worksheet". So we've added a button that will take your conversation and make it into a worksheet format automatically (answers at the bottom); you can then check it over and refine it in Word, GoogleDoc or PowerPoint/Slides since all the math is proper math equations! And it's cheaper, quicker and more energy-efficient than having AI generate it through your prompt.
You'll find improvements in the foreground but also lots has been happening behind the screen: chatOAME "thinks" better and longer than all free and most paid AIs for a more Ontario-focused response and it always uses high-quality research that supports Growing Success, High-Impact Instructional Practices, our Ontario Mathematical Practices and other processes like Building Thinking Classrooms. chatOAME's goal is to help you lift your practice and your resources as it works diligently to meet OAME's vision to create an equitable mathematics education community where everyone experiences high-quality, research-informed, and engaging activities that promote critical thinking and a positive attitude towards mathematics.
